My new writing project runs along the guidelines of urban fantasy. Exciting, hu? I do have zombies, but no vampires or wereanything (yet). Demons, yes. And my protagonist is a witch.
This is kind of where the trouble begins. I am not quite sure how to change the real magic stuff to make it into fantasy and at the same time get everything right. Does it bother you when you read about witches like those from "Charmed"? How much fantasy can witches get away with before it gets incredible? There have to be rules, after all, otherwise every little problem along the plot could simply be overcome by snapping her fingers.
Plus, I am tangling myself in the idea that there should be laws and official rules concerning magic, in a world where everyone accepts that this is real. Basically I am trying to build a world that is much like ours and magical, without falling into the trap of making everything bureaucratic and boring.
At least I wrote myself a hottie as company. There's upsidese to being the creator of your own worlds! And now it's caffeine'o'clock. Again.

This is as far as I get when I consider planning a novel. I'd love to write urban fantasy but I can never decide how much fantasy should be included (not too much because then I wouldn't want to write it). I love the way Jim Butcher, Kelley Armstrong and Kim Harrison blend together magic and reality. When I read their books it all seems so believable, even the 'charmed' like stuff.
I thought of doing a novel but that far as I got. Ok I thought of a type it would be sci-fi soap opera.
Coffee is on
I absolutely love Jim Butcher, Kelley Armstrong and Kim Harrison. They balance their worlds quite nicely.
I think you're right about creating those rules concerning magic. Is she going to be born into a family of witches or will she discover her power?
Thanks for your feedback! My favorite urban fantasy author is Laurell K. Hamilton (although I like her earlier books better because there is more story and less sex on the pages), but I like Kim Harrison as well, and am planning to read into others as well. If only I had time... ^^ The manuscript is in German, but I wrote a short story with the protagonist (or a version of her) in English - you could go and read if you like. ^^
