Pagan Blog Prompt: What's in a name?

Do you have a witch/magic name(s)? If more than one, is one reserved for ritual use, with another that you go by to everyone else?  If you do use a witch/magic name, how did you come by yours? Was it 'given' to you? Were you lead to it? Or did you pick it yourself? If you don't use a witch/magic name, why not? (Link)

This one is easy. I do not have a "magical name", because everything I do is part of my witchy life and hence magical. There is no way I could disconnect any of it from the rest - the recycling goes hand in hand with the rituals, the laundry accompanies the spells, and cooking is magical anyway. So, what should I use a "secret" magical name for?

Besides, "Diandra" is pretty cool anyway. It's a combination of "Diana", whom I used to work with for a looooong time, and "Diondra", celtic, meaning, "From the sacred spring".

I love this post. For my first several years on the path, I used a magickal name, though only to write personal rituals and spells, and communicate online.

Then I met my mother for the first time in 30 years and I asked her why she named me "Wendy". She told me she chose that name, because "Wendy the Witch" (from the original Casper the Ghost cartoons and comics) was so cute.

I haven't used a magick name since.

I, too, agree. Diandra is a marvelously magickal name. I love it!

Although I am lucky in the fact that I really like my birth name (Deanna - derived from Diana, Roman goddess of the moon) when I first discovered my original path of Wicca years ago I loved the idea of having a separate spiritual identity. I had a "series" of magickal names that I would change my mind about until I finally settled on Winter Slytherin about 7 years ago. Winter - derived from my favorite (most spiritual feeling) season and from the season Demeter (a main patron Goddess) brings. "Slytherin" is a "house placement" from the Harry Potter stories generally perceived as evil but many times they are simply misunderstood introverts. I do like the way you said this "I do not have a 'magical name', because everything I do is part of my witchy life and hence magical. There is no way I could disconnect any of it from the rest". I totally agree with that although I like having that separate spiritual part that feels simply mine. I also had a writing pen name should I ever publish any poetry or works (Leigha Gore) and anything I have written in the past is signed with this name. However (other than blogging) I no longer can seem to find the time to write anymore since becoming a mother 7 years ago. Thanks for this post, loved it!

I don't have a magical name either. I LOVE my name. It's all me. Really, Daisy Warrior is pretty awesome, isn't it?

I don't have a magical name. Even though I have tons of nicknames and my real name is SUPER common (I still like it, but I have TONS of friends with the same name), something about picking a "witch name" has never really sat right with me. Probably because most witch names I hear sound like something from a pulp novel or cheesy B teen flick to me. No offense to anyone who loves their witch name, though. Each to her own.

I just wrote about this too! I think I had my name before because I needed time to work my magick into my full life. At the time, I had to have it hidden and secret. Now is different and I embrace it in every part of my life. Maybe that is why my name escaped me, because it was here when I needed it and now I don't. Kind of like Elliot in Pete's Dragon (have you seen that movie?)

And yes, your name is beautiful!
